Deadlift: every rep counted.
The deadlift is a hip hinge, and the most common home mistake is a half rep. Apex One tracks shoulders, hips and knees from the side and only counts reps you finish standing tall.
How to do a deadlift
Works: Glutes, hamstrings, back extensors and grip
- Stand with feet hip-width apart, weights in front of your thighs or on the floor.
- Soften your knees and push your hips back, keeping your back long and the weight close to your legs.
- Lower until you feel a stretch in your hamstrings, or the weight reaches mid-shin.
- Drive your hips forward to stand tall. Squeeze your glutes at the top without leaning back.
Common mistakes and how Apex One cues them
Skipping the lockout
A rep counts only when your hips come all the way through to standing.
Turning it into a squat
Think “hips back”, not “knees forward”. Shins stay fairly vertical in a hinge.
Rounding to reach lower
Only go as low as you can with a long back. Range improves with practice.
Camera setup
Shoulders, hips and knees in view. Use decent light and keep a plain background if you can. Apex One tells you when it can see you and only counts reps it fully tracked. Video stays on your phone.
Questions
Can I check Romanian deadlift form too?
Yes. Romanian deadlifts are tracked the same way: a hip hinge from the side, counted at lockout.
Is it safe to deadlift at home?
With light weights and good control, most healthy adults can hinge at home. If you have back pain, check with a physiotherapist or doctor first; Apex One is exercise education, not medical advice.
Phone position?
Side-on at hip height, about 2 to 3 metres away, so shoulders, hips and knees are visible through the whole rep.
